“Thank you Catherine for a very friendly welcome and for the bread, butter, milk and sweets. A very comfortable, warm stay.”

Steve, Ian & Brendon - September/October 2015

“What a find, and such a lovely welcome from Catherine - fresh, still warm, home-baked bread, Shetland Butter and other local goodies. A lovely place and helped make my first and sadly too short visit to Shetland even more special. Thank you so much…..”

Lisa - September 2015

“From the start when Catherine met us, we began to enjoy the luxury of staying at Hillside Brae! Warm bread, Shetland Butter and sweetie treats! The house has been a delight to stay in - very well equipped with everything we needed and more! We have had a fabulous holiday enjoying beautiful Shetland!”

The Bifield Family - August 2015

“Another brilliant week in Shetland. Thank you so much for this lovely chalet and the welcome. So many memories of this week - the sum and sunburn, the mist and lack of puffins at Hermaness, the abundance of puffins at Noss & Sumburgh, cracking night at Sandsound, late night walks and it still not dark - on, and the wool tours with Stephanie. (if you have any liking for wool and/or old machinery do go for a visit to Jamieson’s Mill at Sandness.) Andrew will probably be back later in the year with Peerie Mup, until then, God Bless and thank you.”

Andrew & Shona - July 2015

“We’ve hugely enjoyed our holiday here - thank you so much for the warm welcome & use of this lovely property. The bread & other treats were much appreciated. This was our first visit to Shetland & it has surpassed our expectations. The islands scenery, wildlife & weather have all been superb. We’ve been struck by the friendliness of everyone we’ve met and are sorry to leave.”

Bruce & Dorothy - July 2015

“Our 2nd week on Shetland and a real treat to step into so nice a house and for it to feel like home (I wish it was ours!) Two excellent B&B’s preceding this so we feel we have been thoroughly spoiled. All there people we have met on Shetland have been so friendly and the scenery is stunning. We have, for the most part, had good weather if a little cool. Our day at Sumburgh Head was fantastic - sunshine and puffins, what more could you ask? Good sightings too of red throated divers, bonxies (terrifying!), seals, otters (x4), golden & little ringed plovers to name a few. Do go to the Visitor Centre at Hoswick, it’s charming. Our own Burra Bear is coming come, having combed Lerwick for one & visited Wendy’s workshop. Hopefully the shortage is temporary! Thank you very much for bread and all the lovely little treats.”

“Another very enjoyable stay in the Purple Lodge - very comfortable and so well equipped. Views from the window worth waking early for! Managed a trip to Yell, Sumburgh, Hoswick & Lerwick. Enjoyed some “Wool Week” activities, including a trip to Jamieson’s Spinning Mill, wood whittling at Hoswick! Seth Lakeman was superb at The Mareel, and the bands, dance & supper every enjoyable at Bigton Hall last night. And the week in Fair Isle before, combined with this week, have made for a great holiday. Plus some rarities were good for the bird watchers! Thanks.”

“What a pleasure to stay in the Purple House! It is so well equipped and comfortable, and the hot bread and flowers were a lovely welcome. We found Gulberwick a wonderful centre from which to explore the islands, and the weather and all else conspired to give us a wonderful holiday. The Shetland coastline and wildlife and birds are fascinating. The week went by too quickly, but we would love to come back for another visit. Thank you so much.”

Val - September 2013

“Amazing house and hospitality. The flowers & the homemade bread were a lovely touch! The house is perfect in every way - cosy, easy to clean up, full of quality furnishings & accessories - couldn’t ask for more. Great location for exploring Shetland. Handy for Lerwick - loved the Museum, enjoyed Film Quiz Night at the Mareel and wandering the harbour. Garry, the guide we used from Shetland Nature, was great - we saw a pod of 30 pilot whales and tracked a family of 3 otters for over 40 minutes - another dream ticked off the list! Highly recommended. Drove all over Northmavine, Central Mainland, West Mainland and going South to Jarlshof. Lovely lunch at Busta House Hotel. Great walks at St Ninian’s Isle and Eshaness - beautiful scenery. Since Tuesday we’ve been blessed with sun! Couldn’t have asked for more. Will definitely recommend Hillside Brae to friends! Oh and the wool shops (Jamiesons and Jamieson & Smith) are really special! My wool stash has multiplied!”

We’ve enjoyed exploring - would recommend Bannamin Beach on West Burra below Scalloway. Was even nice weather when here was enveloped by cloud & is not many miles away. Saw four seals in Gulberwick bay. Had a lovely meal in Hay’s Dock Restaurant in Lerwick. Unst is worth the trip up - we went to Hermaness and Saxavord.”

Susan & Mike - August 2013

“Purple Lodge is so comfortable with all mod cons and a fab shower. Very welcome after an overnight ferry! I took some lovely photos of this beautiful part of the world. “Thank you for your wonderful welcome to your fantastic home – fresh flowers, home baked bread and every comfort you could wish for – even a Thermos! (used it a lot!!) We have so enjoyed our week. We’ve had great weather and seen some beautiful places – St Ninian’s tombolo, Meal Beach, Dale of Walls, and the Sands of Breckon. We had a magnificent Sunday Tea at Bigton, trips to Yell and Unst on the ferries, visited the beautiful Burra and took home our very own ‘Burra Bear’ when we met Wendy at her workshop. We walked on the cliffs at the stunning Eshaness and enjoyed Braewick Cafe with its extraordinary views. We got really close to the puffins at Sumburgh Head and saw lots of seals around the island – even one in our own bay. Fantastic weather most of the time, great birdwatching, South-sea paradise beaches for picnics, amazing archaeological sites and the brilliant, exhausting Shetland Folk Festival! D - Winter Let 2011/12

“I’m studying abroad at Cardiff University & instead of going home for the holidays, I decided to come to Shetland. It’s lovely here & this cabin is lovely. The bread was great and Catherine & Mark were very accommodating. I’d love to come back and spend more time here.”

Sarah, United States - December 2011/January 2012

“Excellent, excellent self-build. The standard of the finish and the design of the property is first class. Am very envious, and the magazines have given us plenty of food for thought. Really comfortable place, just far enough out of Lerwick to be a peaceful haven, even given the lovely November weather! 2nd time here on Shetland and we’ll be back again for more next year. Back off home now to put in a call to get some NorDan windows, they’re far better than the rubbish, draughty uPvc junk we’ve currently got on the house!”

David & Jane, Nottingham - September 2011

“We had one of our best-ever holidays. The cottage is excellent, nothing to wish for. We really appreciated the helpfulness before arrival. Shetlanders seem to be very pessimistic about the weather, but we found if you just go & hope it seems to work fine! One of the few places we’d really like to return to. Thank you.”

Peter & Heather, West Sussex - September 2011

“This has been my base for over 2 weeks. I’ve not been on holiday here, but working all hours. It has been wonderfully luxurious for an artist to be living in such a well equipped place – and great to be in a holiday let with sharp knives!! Have turned the living room/kitchen into a studio, working late into the nights to get LK243 Under Sail residency finished. Having spend the summer at sea on board the Shetland based “Swan” for The Tall Ships Race, it is strange how the sea looks so different from this vantage point. Have mastered the art of missing the bus into Lerwick from the top road – so enjoyed walking in instead. Thanks to Mark & Catherine for the bread and warm hospitality!”

Imi, Norway - August/September 2011

“Great cottage with fab views – we have loved watching the boats sail in and out of the harbour, especially the cruise ships. Great base for the island and a cosy, well-equipped purple palace. Would come back again!!”

Monica, Brighton - August 2011

“It’s a really nice shower! Actually keeps to the same temperature and pressure which is surprisingly unusual for showers. Also, as many people have pointed out, the bread is amazing. “In many years of travelling together we’ve never gone back to the same place twice in a row, let along stayed in the very same house, but when we sat down to plan this summer’s holiday we simply knew we wanted to be back in Shetland and here at Hillside Brae. Thank you so much for all the care and attention to detail that makes this such a lovely place to call home (if only briefly). Just like last year “We’ll be back as soon as we can”

Lori & Eric, New York - July 2010

“Many congratulations on providing a superb, well appointed base for our visit to Shetland – we wanted for nothing and the sun even shone most of the time! We will have no hesitation in recommending you to our friends!”

Peter, Richard & Robin , Cumbria - June/July 2010

“Easy access to the website, plenty of info and convincing photos of the house brought us to the marvellous Wisemans, Catherine & Mark, in Gulberwick. They are “perfectionists”! We have never had a house so complete, so clean, so tidy. Thanks for your hospitality!”
